35th Gulf Classic Regatta 2017

Next year in March will see the 35th Gulf Classic over the weekend of 10, 11, 12. Over the years there has been a steady drop off of entries in the 100 mile event and the 50 mile event becoming the more popular. Last year had one entrant in the 100 mile division. So it became time listen and to look at a revamp.

There is a new team of keen sailors on the committee and we want to make this event pump and importantly make it a fun.  The race is still under the Waikato Squadron flag and will be run out of the Maraetai Boating Club as it has been in past years. The courses will now consist of an 80 mile course for keelers. The main trailer yacht event will be a 60 mile course and there will be a 40 mile course for boats below a specified rating. For the trailer yacht divisions we have dropped the leg over to Cow Island out. It was felt that quite often the race was decided on this leg. The courses are on our face book page and are around the inner gulf islands and cover all points of sail.

Friday night we will have the briefing at the Maraetai Club. Meals will be available from the club caterer and the bar will be open. We plan to make this a fun night and start the competition with an inter-crew quiz night with a nautical theme and small prizes, there has been rumours of the odd bar tab prize.

In the 60 mile trailer yacht division we would like to encourage class races as possible. So far it looks like we will have the Ross 780’s, Elliott 7.4’s and we would love to see a strong Noelex 25 division.

We do not want to make this race all about 25 footers and would actively encourage the Jokers, Noelex 22’s, Farr 6000’s , Aquarius 22’s and any other group who can muster up a class.

For details please check out our Facebook page Gulf Classic Regatta 2017 - Waikato Yacht Squadron or visit the website www.waikatoyachtsquadron.org.nz and click on Gulf Classic.

So please, mark this one up on your calendar and we would love to see you at Maraetai in March 2017.
